71st Tony Awards: Best and Worst Celebrity Style Statements

The 71st Annual Tony Awards, that had the world glued to TV sets on Sunday night, opened a Pandora’s box of celebrity style statements - both oh-so-good and agh-so-bad. Nevertheless, we could not ignore either. While the night was made memorable by the gentle wit of Kevin Spacey who happened to host the show for the first time, our fashion-hungry eyes hunted for style statements that would define our lives until the next few months. We found elegance in the forms of Bette Midler - The Divine Miss M, Olivia Wilde, Sarah Paulson and others. And we also came across such celebrity style statements that we would rather not say “we seek you” to and they helped enhance the CQ of the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre. In short, these upped the comedy quotient of the Tony Awards!

The Best of Celebrity Style Statements

Bette Midler. The Divine Miss M was indeed a vision. She was draped in a unique dress that could be called a silver dream. Aged as old as the Tony Awards itself, Bette Midler wore a gown embellished with a fabulous gunmetal aesthetic and she totally slayed us with her jaw dropping celebrity style statements. Her ensemble was impeccably classy and the long-sleeved attire showed just her neck and hands. A touch of softness was added by the flairs at the ends of her sleeves. The pattern on this silver dream had a feel akin to brocade and that added further dimensions to this exquisite dress. Looking as gorgeous as ever with her glowing skin and a partial up-do of her ginger locks, Miss M enchanted us all in the spectacular number from Michael Kors Collection that perhaps defined the entire night.

Olivia Wilde. HBO has killed Vinyl. But that could do nothing to prevent the lovely Olivia Wilde from dazzling like a ‘70s diva. The presenter was definitely successful in making some solid celebrity style statement last night when she painted the red carpet red. She literally sparkled in a red Michael Kors number that had long sleeves and a plunging neckline. When we saw her posing for shutterbugs, we witnessed a perfect marriage between flawless glowing skin, the chiseled body of a goddess, a soft smile complementing a ravishing jawline. Hung Vanngo had done a splendid job with the rosy makeup on her eyes and the lady looked stunning with a gold clutch by Edie Parker. Olivia Wilde exuded tons of celebrity style statements in her ensemble and made us eagerly wait for her imminent Broadway debut in 1984.

Cynthia Erivo. We all love Cynthia Erivo. She is our favorite star of The Color Purple. But, we love her even more since last night, after she appeared on the red carpet dressed in a black mermaidesque attire created by Chris Gelinas. The black masterpiece was decorated with green beads that contrasted fantastically against the fabric and a feathered hem made it transcend the concept of style statement. Cynthia’s dress was actually a summation of celebrity style statements that blended high fashion and drama into one magnificent attire. The dramatic train coupled with a plunging neckline made her look as though she has walked straight out of a fairy-tale book. We are not sure whether we should thank the 71st Tony Awards for bringing this version of Cynthia Erivo in front of our eyes, or we should bow to Cynthia Erivo for making last night’s Tony Awards so glamorous. Either way, we are satisfied.

Sarah Paulson. The presenter looked absolutely breathtaking in a strapless dress by Rodarte. What made the dress a total killer is the beaded white lacework that adorned its entire length. The beauty of the white lace was accentuated further by the soft blush lining underneath. Like a true diva, Sarah accessorized this marvelous column dress with really big drop earrings and a wine red clutch. And, when she nearly killed us with her bare back, we were already high on her celebrity style statements. The actress who won our hearts as Marcia Clark in American Crime Story has made us fall head over heels in love with her the moment we saw her last night at the 71st Tony Awards.

The Worst of Celebrity Style Statements

Christine Ebersole. The first on our list of Broadway heavyweights that gave us the worst celebrity style statements at the 71st Tony Awards last night is none other than the legendary Christine Ebersole who was also a nominee. She attended the prestigious ceremony in a purple dress that was puffy-sleeved and looked old. For an actress of her stature, she wore a dress that was just not worthy of her, especially for an occasion that obviously demanded more glamor and elan. We would hope to see a more stylish avatar of Christine Ebersole the next time.

Keltie Knight. We were shocked again as the otherwise glamorous Keltie Knight appeared on the red carpet at the 71st edition of the Tony Awards on Sunday night. While we were eagerly waiting for dashing celebrity style statements, Ms. Knight disappointed us outright in her dress that was more of an uncontrolled style riot. Her dress had such a large number of design elements, ranging from laces to harem pants, that each of them was crying for individual attention. Keltie’s attire was lacy, long-sleeved, bow-necked, sequined, puffy-shouldered and harem-panted, and on top of everything it was a sheer jumpsuit. We are of course not against this ensemble because it could have made her one of the best-dressed celebrities at last night’s ceremony. However, we do feel she could have parted ways with a couple of its numerous facets.

Jenna Lyons. Not sure whether Christine Ebersole and Keltie Knight had shocked us enough, Jenna Lyons raised our disappointments to new heights when she took to the red carpet. Even though she is known to be a fashion connoisseur who has set countless trends, it is most likely that last night she forgot that every outfit cannot be a super-hit. The snake-printed robe that she draped herself in failed to give us any of the celebrity style statements that we would like to remember.

The 2017 Tony Awards gave us a mixed pot of best and worst celebrity style statements. While the best ones delighted us, the worst statements would keep us expecting much better from these celebrity fashionistas every singly time we see them in the future. My Style Authority believes in fashion and beauty, and it reckons that the worst moments provide the impetus for achieve the best.
